Developing an Effective Personal Statement for Your CV
There is a lot of information out there about curriculum vitae (CVs), but leave out the importance of the personal statement. Here are a few ideas to assist you in developing an effective personal statement for your CV.
Although personal statements are not required and not always included in the CV, having a clear, specific statement can really help the employer understand you and your qualifications better and how those qualities can fit in their company. Besides, why would you not want to give every opportunity to express yourself in the most favourable light? This is especially important for those seeking positions or fellowships within the academia arena.
The Basics
The personal statement is typically no more than 500 words and is not included in the CV, but rather is a part the cover letter. Some employers or institutions may offer a question in which you would use the personal statement to answer.
Keep your statement clear and concise while avoiding anything fancy such as special fonts or coloured paper. Let your words will set you beyond the crowd of CVs. Check grammar and do a spell check. Make sure the structure is good and the reading flows well. Give yourself 24 hours away from the completed personal statement and come back to re-edit with fresh eyes. Let a friend help you.
The Heart of Your Personal Statement
Give yourself some time to research the job or grant you’re applying for so you can offer specific details as it relates to them. This also lets them know you understand what they require of you should you get the position or award.
Hook them at the start with your lead. Great writing locks the reader’s attention immediately and keeps their eyes on the page until the last full stop. This is the effect you want to create in your personal statement. Consider the question, consider the reader and write specifically to that reader. Focus on the position, then on you and your abilities. Let them know what makes you different from the other candidates and how will you contribute to the company’s success. Be factual, positive and honest, but don’t be shy to sell yourself.
